Volunteering in Ukraine: Building a Safe Future for Children in Korolivka

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine has faced devastating damage to schools, hospitals, and communities. Yet through the power of international volunteers and NGOs, hope is being rebuilt every day. One inspiring example is the colorful new bomb shelter for a kindergarten in Korolivka, Makariv district. This project shows how volunteering in Ukraine directly protects children and helps communities recover.
War Damage in Korolivka
Korolivka endured 34 days of occupation in 2022. During heavy fighting, an air bomb struck near the local kindergarten, severely damaging the building. Thanks to Ukrainian volunteers and charitable organizations, the kindergarten was restored in 2023. However, under Ukrainian law, schools cannot reopen without a certified bomb shelter — a challenge faced by many kindergartens and schools across Ukraine today.
How Volunteers Helped Rebuild
In November 2024, the Makariv community appealed to the Gurtum Foundation, a Ukrainian NGO active in reconstruction. Volunteers, international partners, and donors united to construct a certified modular shelter that met new safety standards. By December 2024, construction was finished, with interior works completed in January 2025. In spring, the exterior was decorated with bright cubes, a new playground was added, and the surrounding grounds were landscaped.
On May 27, 2025, the shelter officially opened with the participation of community leaders, partners, and the Ambassador of Japan to Ukraine, Mr. Masashi Nakagome.
International Partnerships Make an Impact
This rebuilding project was possible thanks to global support:
- Deloitte Japan Group, via the Japan–Ukraine Friendship Association NGO "Krayany", financed the construction.
- Deloitte Ukraine provided local partnership support.
- Shoshul Bud Company carried out the construction.
- ZZV DEK LLC supplied materials.
- The Hurtum Foundation team and volunteers coordinated the entire project.

For the people of Korolivka, the shelter means safety, stability, and a step toward normal life. For children, it brings security, education, and the joy of childhood they deserve.
