Balakun – a bridge between passionate volunteer mentors from around the world and Ukrainians eager to learn English.
We connect Ukrainians (students) who want to learn English with fluent English speakers (mentors) from around the world who want to support Ukraine in a practical way. Mentors can contribute from their own homes, and it costs only their time.
Our name, "Balakun," is Ukrainian for "chatterbox," representing the essence of our initiative – to foster meaningful conversations and build connections.
In these challenging times for Ukraine, learning English isn’t just about language; it’s an escape, a way to communicate with the world, and a beacon of hope. Our mission goes beyond language – it’s about unity, support, and resilience.
Type of work:
- Mentoring: One-on-one online sessions with students to practice English. You don’t need to be a tutor or teacher – just a fluent speaker. We’ll provide helpful materials if you need them. Many students simply wish to chat.
- Group Teaching: Experienced teachers can run weekly group classes (no more than 10 students) on topics such as general English, medical English, business English, English for IT, etc.
- Admin Volunteers: We always need help on the admin side. This includes verifying new members, monitoring social media, and working with the teaching materials team to provide the best content for our users. Additionally, people with management, IT, or graphic design experience are very helpful!
Most of our students are in Ukraine, so online sessions are typically scheduled during the day and evening Kyiv time. However, some students are outside Ukraine, so mentors from all over the world can find a suitable time to meet with their students.
